Things To Consider When Planning Your Engagement Session!

The question I get asked the most when planning engagement photos is; “What should I wear?” There are a few things you want to consider!

Vibe of the Shoot

Do you want fun and free? Are you thinking you want photos up on the shoulders - being thrown around - piggy back rides? You probably don’t want to wear a dress then.

Are you thinking that you want romantic and whimsical? For this you’ll want to wear a more formal vibe and wear something that’s not restrictive. Something that can blow in the wind.

What would you wear on a date?

EVERY couple is different. Some couples like to dress up for dates and some like to go on casual dates. When prepping for an engagement shoot it’s not a bad idea to dress like you’re going on a date

BE COMFORTABLE!!!!!

This one is simple. Don’t wear something because you saw it on insta and you think it would look super cute. Wear something that you’re comfortable wearing. If you’re not comfortable it WILL show in photos!

THINGS TO AVOID

Wearing the same color. It sounds cute but you may end up looking like one blob of color. Instead coordinate colors and pick colors that compliment each other. Avoid patterns if possible. It’s okay if one of you wear a pattern, but the other should wear a solid. Some patterns such as pinstripes will look weird on camera as well sometimes.

Location Selection!

Second most popular question is; “Where should we take our engagement photos?” There are a few things you want to consider for this one!

Is there somewhere special to the two of you?

If you guys have somewhere special to the two of you it may not be a bad idea to take the photos there! This way you have photos to document your special place!

What’s the vibe???

Once you’ve decided your vibe with the outfits - make sure you pick a location that fits! If you’re thinking romantic you may want gardens, mountains, water. If you’re thinking comfortable you may want more urban, in home, or even pretty much any outdoor location. You’d be surprised how jeans and a cute top can go with anything.

Are you bringing your pets?

This may seem obvious but if you’re looking to have your pets in your photos - make sure the location is pet friendly. Also make sure you take them to a place where if you don’t want photos with them for a minute you can either put them in the car or tie them up nearby.

When Should You Have Your Engagement Session?

If you don’t have a specific time of year that you want to have them you’ll want to consider a few things. Do you want a photo on your save the date? Save the dates need to be sent out 6-9 months before your wedding and 9-12 months before your wedding if it’s a destination wedding. If this isn’t the case - do them whenever you want!
